Juniper "itoigawa"

Junipers are today one of the most popular species with bonsai artists all across the world. One of the reasons for this is as you can very quickly create a very impressive and convincing bonsai from good quality stock. This tree has been field grown originally for a minimum of 25 years. During that time techniques were applied that created this powerful trunk line with a very interesting live vein, filled with movement.

There are many foliage types amongst the juniper species but certainly one of the most sought after is the 'itoigawa' type foliage due to its compact growing habit which makes trees appear very full, the fact that it does not readily develop juvenile scale like foliage and the very pleasing green colour of the foliage.

Trees of this size and degree of development have become extremely popular not only with the Japanese themselves, but also in China and in Europe. The problem however is that the growers with the skill to develop trees like this are slowly vanishing, with several closing their doors in the last couple years. As the demand increases and supply dwindles, the value of these trees increase. In fact I am surprised I am able to offer you this tree at this price, as it is somewhat lower than I have seen these trees selling for of late.

The new owner of this tree is going to have a wonderful time working on this tree and enhancing its inherent qualities. It is a powerful tree with many branches to work with. The new owner may choose to further increase the size of the shari by removing more of the mature, rounded live vein. The jins could also be further detailed, but as they are already old this work will be fun and can dramatically enhance the qualities of this tree.

This itoigawa juniper is planted in an unglazed container of Japanese origin. It will not need repotting soon and in a very short space of time this tree can be shown with some guaranteed "ooh's and aah's."

Imported from Japan in March 2016, from the Saitama area.
