For me this Japanese Five Needle or White Pine on display at the Taikan-ten Exhibition in Kyoto, Japan in November 2016 was the star of the exhibition.
Also known as "Goyomatsu" in Japanese, this specimen possesses the qualities of a masterpiece. The nebari is incredible, conjuring up images of a tree struggling through many years of hardship in a rocky crag high up in the mountains, where this species is naturally found. The fully developed canopy of fine needles is perfectly complimented by the solid, unglazed container with simple lines.
