Ibaraki Hard Akadama is a Japanese granular growing medium that helps retain moisture and nutrient ions while providing a structured root environment. This small 3–5mm grade is a versatile choice for bonsai and succulent mixes, with selected uses for orchid growers who require a moisture-retentive mineral ingredient.

Use as the moisture-retentive component of a mineral-based bonsai mix. Pair with Japanese Hyuga Pumice, Small, 3–6mm for a closely matched particle range. A 1:1 blend is a practical starting point, not a universal recipe: adjust it to the tree species, container depth, climate and watering routine. Select a finer or coarser grade where the tree and pot require it.
For succulent growers
Blend with small-grade Hyuga pumice to create a mineral-rich growing mix with adjustable moisture retention. Increase or decrease the akadama proportion according to the species and how quickly the container dries. Plants that require a pronounced dry period need particular care in cool or humid conditions. Very small seedlings and fine-rooted plants may suit a finer particle size.
For orchid growers
Akadama is a specialist mineral ingredient rather than an all-purpose orchid medium. Consider it only for orchids whose roots and moisture requirements suit this particle size and level of water retention. For many epiphytic orchids, begin with Premium, Treated Orchid Bark and preserve the open spaces around the roots. Where additional moisture retention is needed, Rehydrated Sphagnum Moss is another option to use selectively, according to the plant and growing environment.
Preparation and ongoing care
Sieve out loose dust before potting and handle the granules gently to avoid crushing them. Use containers with unobstructed drainage holes and check moisture within the root zone rather than relying on surface colour alone.
Continue feeding according to the plant's needs. Inspect the medium during repotting and replace it when particle breakdown reduces drainage or aeration. Akadama does not prevent overwatering or eliminate the risk of root rot.
