- Sphagnum Moss: Retains moisture around roots, cuttings and air layers while providing a light, well-aerated environment that encourages new root growth.
- Pumice: A porous volcanic material that improves drainage, aeration and root development while holding a useful amount of moisture and nutrients.
- Akadama: This Japanese air dried clay particle provides an excellent balance of drainage, moisture retention and aeration while encouraging fine feeder-root growth.
- LECA: Lightweight expanded clay aggregate creates permanent air spaces and reliable drainage without breaking down or compaction.
- Perlite: A lightweight material that improves aeration and drainage.
- Lava Stone: A durable, porous volcanic material that improves drainage, maintains soil structure and provides surfaces on which fine roots can develop.
- Agricultural Carbon: Retains nutrients, absorbs impurities and supports beneficial microbial activity.
- Vermiculite: Vermiculite holds moisture and nutrients effectively, making it useful in small quantities where greater water retention is required.
- Coir / Coco Peat: This renewable organic material retains moisture well while maintaining better aeration and structural stability than conventional peat.
- Kanuma: An acidic Japanese granular medium ideal for acid-loving bonsai such as satsuki azaleas, providing moisture retention, drainage and fine-root development.
