Fine Ibaraki Hard Akadama for Small Bonsai and Succulents
Ibaraki Hard Akadama is a Japanese granular growing medium valued for its moisture retention and ability to hold nutrient ions. This fine 1–3mm grade suits smaller-particle mixes for small bonsai and fine-rooted succulents, with selected applications for orchid growers who need a moisture-retentive mineral component.
Key benefits

For bonsai growers
Use fine akadama for shohin, mame and other small bonsai where the particle size suits the roots and container. Combine with Japanese Hyuga Pumice, Fine, 1–3mm for a closely matched mineral blend. Adjust the balance to the tree species, pot depth, climate and watering routine. Fine mixes have smaller air spaces than coarse mixes, so avoid compaction and monitor moisture carefully.
For succulent growers
Incorporate into a mineral-based mix for small or fine-rooted succulents when additional moisture retention is appropriate. Blend with fine Hyuga pumice and adjust the proportions to suit the species and growing conditions. Plants that require pronounced drying between waterings need particular care with fine, moisture-retentive media, especially in cool weather.
For orchid growers
Fine akadama is a specialist option rather than an all-purpose orchid medium. Consider it only where the orchid's roots and moisture requirements suit a finer mineral component. Many mature epiphytic orchids need a coarser, more open root environment; Premium, Treated Orchid Bark is a more appropriate starting point for those mixes. Where additional moisture retention is needed, Rehydrated Sphagnum Moss offers another option, used selectively to suit the plant and airflow.
Preparation and ongoing care
Sieve out loose dust before potting and use containers with unobstructed drainage holes. Handle the granules gently to limit crushing. Check moisture within the root zone rather than relying on surface colour alone, and adjust watering and feeding to the plant's needs.
Inspect the medium during routine repotting. Replace it when particle breakdown reduces drainage or aeration. Akadama does not prevent overwatering or eliminate the risk of root rot.

I use a 1:1 Akadama:Pumice mixture for all my Hoyas, both to root cuttings and to replant adult plants in. I've not had a root rot issue of a day old; the drainage of this substrate is simply amazing.
Since using fine grain Japanese Akadama in combination with fine grain Pumice as substrate for my Haworthias, I have noticed a significant reduction in the occurrence of root pests and root rot. The plants look healthier and stronger in general. The Akadama component keeps the necessary moisture around the roots, while the pumice betters aeration to the roots. What I like most about Akadama is that it has a darker colour when wet. This serves as a great indication of when the plant needs to be watered or not, which makes my watering regimen significantly easier.

I mixed the Japanese Akadama and Pumice in 50:50 mix and potted up my lithop seedlings. So far they are doing great. This subrate is perfect when excellent drainage is required
As it is my first time using Acadama soil i did not know how to use it. A friend helped me with the Instructions. Just remember to not wash this soil. Leave it for at least 7 days before addjbg shrimp and you are good to go

I recently repotted most of my Bonsai trees in Akadama soil, mostly mixed with Pumice. This makes a huge difference and compared to previous years the early Spring growth is not comparable!
This might seems expensive for soil, but is definitely the most sustainable for a containerized environment. As you get the most root volume possible, no root voids caused by silica are gravel. Optimal water retention and drainage... you’ll be set for few years without being to worried about bonsai getting root bound. Treat yourself.

Used it on different Haworthia, Aloe pepe and Euphorbia monadenium ritchiei. Within week small roots formed. Within a months time the Haworthia tulista angel tears roots grew from no roots to about 12cm long. The colour of the plants in the Akadama went from "dull" to a bright green. I am trying it again on my cacti, placed it in bowl on the 25th of September. Will keep you up to date. Thank you very much.

This Akadama has a good particle size distribution. Slight passive decomposition, but may be due to shipping handling. Happy with purchase and will make it my go-to place for Akadama in SA
