Tropical Pitcher, Nepenthes glabrata
Nepenthes glabrata is a tropical pitcher plant endemic to Sulawesi, where it grows in open, high-elevation forest at approximately 1,600–2,100 metres. Its dainty pitchers reach only a few centimetres in height and display red speckles on a yellowish background, giving the traps a distinctive, hand-painted appearance.
Distinctive features
- Pitchers: Small, colourful traps with red speckling against a yellowish background.
- Lid (operculum): Yellow, complementing the lighter background of the pitcher.
- Lip (peristome): Yellow, framing the pitcher opening.
- Foliage: Green leaves on a plant with a semi-climbing growth habit.
- Origin: Endemic to Sulawesi, with a recorded habitat elevation of 1,600–2,100 metres.
Growth cycle and botanical name
This tropical perennial has no winter dormancy period. The name glabrata comes from the Latin glaber, meaning “hairless”, and refers to the species' mostly hairless surfaces.
Its delicate pitchers and finely speckled patterning make this special-import species a distinctive addition to a tropical pitcher plant collection.
