Trumpet Pitcher, Sarracenia 'Squarepusher'
Sarracenia 'Squarepusher' is a small, compact hybrid distinguished by its angular pitcher lip and contrasting green, white and red colouring. Its narrow pitchers broaden towards the top, opening into a very wide mouth with distinct corners rather than a perfectly circular rim.
Distinctive features
- Pitchers (ascidia): A green base with white, window-like fenestrations and red venation that progressively broadens towards the lid.
- Lip (peristome): An unusually angular profile with pronounced corners, giving the pitcher opening its characteristic squared appearance.
- Lid (operculum): White with contrasting red venation.
- Growth habit: Small and compact, combining distinctive pitcher form with vibrant colour.
Origin and seasonal growth
Sarracenia originate from North America. 'Squarepusher' is a perennial hybrid suited to temperate or continental conditions and requires a winter dormancy period as part of its annual growth cycle.
Behind the name
The hybrid's squared lip inspired its name, a tribute to the musician Squarepusher and the mathematical, angular character associated with his electronic music. This distinctive pitcher shape makes it an interesting addition to a carnivorous plant collection.
