    What is it?

    Pumice is very porous and has a kind of abrasive surface texture. It is produced as a product of volcanic reactions. It absorbs and slowly releases fertilizers and as it drains well, it would be rather difficult if not impossible to over-water. This is another reason why pumice, especially of this size is suitable as a drainage layer; root rot can be avoided. Although roots cannot grow into pumice, just like Leca and stone, roots seem to like pumice and readily ramify in mixes which contain a fair amount of it.

    How to use?

    Bonsai: This medium size of Pumice is perfect as a bottom drainage layer in deep or larger pots where it is recommended that it be combined with the same particle size akadama to increase aeration in this zone and reduce the risk of root rot.

    Orchids and Succulents: Ideal for orchids and larger succulents as it dramatically reduces the risk of root rot caused through excessive moisture. Aeration of the root zone is not impeded and as pumice does not degrade and collapse like bark, repotting intervals are greatly increased or not necessary. If additional moisture retention is needed then add some long fibred sphagnum moss.

    There is nothing better than this pumice!

    I have struggled to find a good growing medium for my orchids. Terry suggested that I try his pumice. I have repotted some orchids that have been dormant for over 2 years. Within a few days I saw new aerial roots and leaves. This is a great product.

    My new potting medium

    I love my orchids and take great care of them but I noticed that, this year particular, I was getting a lot of green algae deposits on the inside of my pots and a few of my plants lost almost all of their flowers. After researching the subject I decided to try a different medium and pot, it's still a bit early to draw conclusions but they all seem to be happy. I am also very happy with the personal and yet highly professional service received and would highly recommend the Bonsai Tree as it is simply the best.

    Japanese Bonsai Akadama and Pumice

    Moving into my 3rd year utilizing Akadama and Pumice as my base substrate the difference in my trees is staggering. The foliage is healthier and the root balls aren't even in the same ball park. Very little hacking into your root ball with a pick or rake anymore so no more over damaged roots. A must for those looking for a bit extra from their trees

    Update on rooting cacti in pumice

    A year ago I received a head of Mammillaria geminispina, that had been taken off a large clump. It had no roots whatsoever. The cutting was sat on top of a 10x10 pot with 100% pumice, and supported not to fall over. It was placed in a sunny position, and watered normally, once a week with the other plants around it, with a bone dry winter rest. My plan was to see whether it would root, and then to repot into an all-purpose succulent soil mix. I basically forgot about the plant. This week was the first time in a while it got a close look. I tipped the pot to the side, thinking the top layer of pumice would fall out. It didn't, which surprised me. When I scratched the surface, I discovered that roots had grown throughout the entire surface layer, and had even attached to the underside of all the top grains. I dug a bit deeper, and the entire pot was chock full of roots, holding the substrate and plant rock solid in place. I have never before seen a cactus do this in any other substrate. I had my doubts about the large particle size, thinking the medium would not pack down tightly enough to keep the plant anchored or the moisture in long enough. I'm happy to say I was wrong on both counts, so spectacularly that I have undergone a complete paradigm shift. This pumice stuff is really something else. Bless the Japanese for first trying to grow trees in it, and bless Terry for bringing it to our shores.
