Experience the unparalleled benefits of Ibaraki Hard Akadama and elevate your gardening and aquascaping projects to new heights!
Highly praised growing medium for bonsai, succulents & aquariums. Customers said it "promotes excellent root development" and "holds water very well" while providing superior drainage. The hard grade maintains structure through repeated watering. One customer noted significant sizing inconsistency, with over 50% passing through stated sieve size, making it expensive.
Very disappointed with the quality of the sieve size. I bought four packs, and in each pack, over 50% of the material passed through the 3mm sieve, while of that smaller material, 40% passed through the 1mm sieve.
So it's starting to get very expensive, especially considering I only got 4 liters of Ibaraki Hard Akadama, Small, 3-5mm out of the four 2-liter packs I bought.
Great 👍
Very good to mix with normal soil for better drainage and root growth.
These Ibaraki hard Akadama granules are spot-on for repotting junipers and maples. 3–5 mm gives a tidy, even structure; roots get air but still find purchase. The ‘hard’ grade holds shape through repeated watering, so you’re not left with mush after a season. I opened the 14 L bag and found almost no fines — just clean particles, minimal dust, and a warm orange colour that looks good in shallow pots. It’s pricier than generic bonsai soil, but for small trees it’s worth the control. Durable, consistent, and easy to work with.
Great for my bonsai and succulents. Excellent for developing roots on newly harvested material
The Hard Akadama never disappoints and all my bonsais that needed repotting is healthy and happy.
Kobayashi Akadama is not too expensive, and Akadama is still the best medium, to encourage quick new root development!
Fantastic service and very fast delivery. I have added pumice and lava rock for my bonsai mixture and I cannot wait for repotting of my bonsais. I will defiantly be buying more products from Bonsai tree as everything I have bought so far is top quality.
It is a very good product but in my climate in Kimberley it dries out very quickly and additional compost needs to be added to retain a bit more water.
Always a nice experience to deal with Bonsai Tree.
Fast service .
Best medium for those water sensitive plants
I love using this product, it helps the strength off roots and forming of roots. Also creates a nice air flow for the roots to breath.
I switched to using akadama over the past three years and have seen real benefits in its use. With the Kobayashi brand, the extra you get in each pack let's you mix perfect proportions of pummice and akadama without having left over pummice. Really happy with product.
I always get good service.
Akadama has changed my bonsai experience. After three seasons, the results remain phenomenal. It's worth the investment.
Great products for growers, but man akadama & pumice are pricey in SA. Wish someone like Bonsai Tree would import truckloads and sell it in bulk here
never disappointed with the growing media from bonsaitree. quick delivery & nice to be able to source so easily from them & well priced
So far using it with pumice for some succulents that kept get root rot in my previous media, working wonderfully, and have trialled it with some orchids and results so far look promising. A benefit over the sphagnum/bark mix, which I also enjoy, is this so far doesn't seem to attract fungus gnats as it is inorganic
Love it I mixed it with Bonsai tree's professional growing mix finally got the right Bonsai soil for my trees
Akadama is a definate must have as a component for your bonsai soil. Very good when added with Hyuga.
The service really was world class from click to delivery in 24hrs. I purchased the 14KG Ibaraki and wish I listened to Terry's replies omn the You Tube comments sooner regarding the benefits of Akadama as a substrate :) . Its cleaner, easier to use, free draining and works with a variety of plants and succulents I love growing, not just the bonsai materials. I cannot wait for Spring!
I love this product and will always repeat my order in time.
I have never used Akadama before always using my own mix so this purchase was more of an experiment. But what a nice surprise, easy to use and the Baobabs are thriving in it - I'm definitely getting some more.
It was a pleasure purchasing from Bonsai Tree. Excellent quality and in prompt time.. thank you again. Definitely coming back.
Not quite as good as the Ibaraki brand akadama as it is noticeably softer. I use this as part of my succulent growing medium mix (with pumice) and value a medium that does not break down.
Amazing product!
As n first time user,it will be the the change for all my trees
Awsome service
Good price for good quality. Great to have such a good product in SA and at my finger tips.
I'm a total noobie when it comes to bonsai but the amazing service, advice and videos from Terry has made a relatively painless introduction to the world of bonsai. Thanx Terry
The service was excellent and everything handled real quick and speedy delivery. Great product!
Excellent Quality. Easy to use
Really excited to see how my trees will react to the akadama! Super excited.
Akadama is a very versatile product. I use it for the aquarium to buffer the ph. Recently started to use it for my haworthias. Its recommended world wide as a growing medium mixed with pumice. Great product and economical too.
