What is it?

Japanese pumice, or Hyuga as it is known in Japan is a naturally occurring volcanic product from the south part of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan.

Hyuga vs Pumice

These two products are very similar in characteristics however due to the manner in which this Hyuga is formed in nature it is slightly softer and more porous than conventional pumice. In fact Hyuga is so porous it will sink, which reduces erosion when watering.

Due to the porosity of Hyuga aggregates in your growing mixes it enhances:

  1. water retention
  2. nutrients
  3. oxygen

It is suitable for a wide range of plant species as it has an essentially neutral pH of 6.

How to use?

Japanese pumice is highly recommended for more demanding succulents as well as acid loving rhododendron (including Azalea), general pot plants, orchids and it of course forms a crucial part of many bonsai growing mixes.

If I had only one soil component to use for bonsai it would be 100% pumice. If you have akadama, add some. - Michael Hagedorn

As Hyuga will not under normal circumstances break down it can be sifted and re-used however if you intend doing so a disinfecting treatment using Sporekill is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of spreading fungal or bacterial issues.

Hyuga can be combined with other elements such as akadama or peat (no more than 20% of the total mix). Due to the good drainage qualities of hyuga it is very often used to assist a sick tree to regain vigor and health. In such a case 100% Japanese pumice may be used.

For typical growing conditions, a ratio of 1(akadama) : 1(pumice) can be used. For plants which prefer more moisture you can double the quantity of akadama.

High-quality volcanic pumice from Japan with excellent drainage and aeration properties. Customers praised its effectiveness for succulents, bonsai, and various plants, noting "impressive root development" and improved plant health. The pH-neutral medium retains moisture while preventing waterlogging. Shoppers appreciated the consistent particle size and sterile nature.

This Hyuga Pumice is a very high-quality Japanese volcanic substrate.
It is a natural pumice stone from Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. Its high porosity allows for excellent water and air circulation.
It retains sufficient moisture while preventing the roots from becoming waterlogged. It is nearly neutral, with a pH of approximately 6, making it suitable for a wide variety of plants.
As it is a natural and sterile material, it minimizes the risk of disease in the substrate.
Thank you to Bonsai Tree for importing quality products so that we can benefit from them.

This product has literally changed the way I look at gardening, and the number of applications it has is so many I can't even list them all because I probably haven't discovered them all yet. I use it in succulent mixes, various houseplant soil mixes, even super hot peppers I struggled to grow for years have thrived since adding pumice to the soil mix. I even use it in some carnivorous plant mixes. And of course it's great for any bonsai mix. It works well for absorbing extra moisture from soil mixes that need to dry in between waterings, which means you need to stay on top of watering schedules when using pumice, but the results are worth it once you start understanding how to work with it. Highly recommended!

Growing Haworthia in pumice and akadama

I have been using akadama and pumice together with peat or best green soil very successfully growing Haworthia.
I mix 2 parts pumice(small) with 1 part akadama(small) and then add that 50- 50 to peat or best green.
The plants grow very well simply because of the effect this mixture have on root growth. It is not too course but allow oxygen to 'penetrate'. Akadama is the crucial part because it helps to capture nutrients.
This mixture is only used around the roots. At the bottom of the pot I always use course grit and around the neck of the plant I use pumice or grit.
This mixture works well in plastic containers but clay is always my preference.
Never add sand to this type of mix for Haworthia or mesembs. It stays wet too long. With most cactus sand can be added to bring cost down. Watering is determined by many factors but it is crucial to wet the full volume of soil to assure that minerals spread evenly throughout the container.
Bottom and top watering is not a good idea. Rather wait until the climate allows watering or mist only to maintain condition.

Great Product.

I love the Japanese Pumice, as it offers great drainage during the wet Western Cape Winters. Used 50/50 with Akadama, it offers the perfect soil mixture for the majority of my trees. Highly recommended.

Japanese Pumice (Hyuga), Small, 3-6mm

I am extremely impressed with the size and quality of the Pumice. I am now using this with Ibaraki Hard Akadama small,3-5mm in a 50/50 ratio to promote growth as well as prevent root rot in my succulent and Cacti collection. It works wonders with Haworthia as well as Ariocarpus, Monkey Tail Cacti and even Aeoniums. It is really worth well and gives exceptional results. Very impressed. I would definitely recommend it to anybody wanting to improve the growth rate and general health of their succulents and Cacti.

Everything

I have and am a most happy and loyal customer. I have ordered almost everything from Terry. Akadama,Pumice,Lava Rock, almost his whole range of tools and many pots. Professional mix is still one of my favourites. My wife often says when I am on line oh you watching bonsai porn and then I am most likely ordering from Terry. Always a good buy. Kaneshin tools first I ordered over 2 years ago and are still in excellent condition and used often. I have yet to sharpen them as they still have there original cutting edges. In a nutshell I love everything Bonsai Tree has to offer and I am a regular customer. His blog is easy to follow and his advice is spot on.

Steven, as always such a pleasure to deal with you. We cherish your custom. May your skills and passion for bonsai continue to grow and you can always count on us to support you.

Fantastic product

Fantastic product, I use it along with perlite to create some extra drainage in my soil mix. Love it because it doesn’t end up floating to the top like perlite does. Would definitely recommend & buy again :)

Hyuga - 3 to 6mm

I first tried this product using the samples Terry would send when purchasing. Was really amazed by the beautiful root development when combined with Akadama and crushed Leca. Product is very uniform with very minimal fine particles after sieving and washing. Pots very well when mixed with Akadama and Crushed Leca. I will probably be changing all my soil over to include these combinations.

Thank You

Great product

I'm having great success with the pumice for both my Haworthia and Cacti. Cape Town weather is quite moderate and it's important to know that the substrate will dry quickly for some of the more sensitive cacti. Roots seem to love it too!

Quality product

I have been using this product as an additional inorganic component to my usual orchid mix- so far so good; it has improved drainage and ventilation while also holding onto additional moisture.

Thanks for this invaluable feedback and photo too Hamza! Yes I personally have been trying the medium particles of pumice for my Tolumnia and find they really love it too. Thank you again!
