These Kaneshin Concave branch cutters are very versatile tools that can be used for a number of procedures. They are essentially a combination of two tools namely the branch cutter and knob or knuckle cutter, and thus are one of the most popular tools in the toolbox of any serious bonsai artist. They may in fact be considered to be general purpose cutters because they are capable of performing a variety of different cutting actions on different portions of the tree.
In certain types of species, such as Chinese maples, the resulting scar tissue can bulge over the area from where a branch was removed is the cut was made flat. A concave cutter with spherical blades or a knuckle cutter is very useful in these circumstances. Either of these tools will create a concave cut so bulging can be avoided as the branch is removed completely from its base and cuts into the branch base to make the resulting cut concave in shape. If a flat cut was made it would be necessary to carve out the cut further, but by employing these tools both steps can be performed in one action.
As with all our Kaneshin tools, these concave branch cutters are handmade by highly skilled Japanese craftsmen. Each tool is boxed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
To cut safely without damaging the tool, the thickness of the branch you want to remove should be 1/3 - 1/2 of the size of the blade.
